The wondrous opal – October’s radiant birthstone

October Birthstone - OpalsThose born in October have the most gorgeous and unique of gem stones to honor their birth month; the opal, a personal favorite of mine. If October is your birth month, you are in luck! Opals are said to symbolize healing, success, confidence and passion.

The name “opal” is derived from the Greek word opallos, meaning “to see a change of color.” In my opinion, that’s putting it mildly! Opals range in color from milky white to black, and in virtually every color of the rainbow with patterns of colors that trigger emotions within us. Formed deep within the earth of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the surrounding sedimentary strata, time and nature heated and molded each opal.

An opal’s color depends on how quickly the volcanic activity around it cooled and what elements were nearby. They can be showy and outrageous with bright blues, turquoise, greens, and fiery oranges – or deep and mysterious black opals, carrying unexpected reds, oranges, golds, and turquoise inside.

I love opals because they are loaded with personality. If you have ever looked at my custom opal jewelry or been to one of my October opal trunk shows, you know that no two opals are ever alike. The patterns of the colors are arresting as they change with the light.

I find it fascinating to help customers look through my opal collection to find the particular opal that expresses the personality of the intended wearer. So many colors and qualities to choose from! I know of no other gem stone that offers such amazing variety and form.

If October is your birth month, come in and let’s find an opal that expresses the real “you.” (Even if you aren’t an October baby, you should own one!) I can guarantee I can show you types of opals that you have never seen and will blow you away, so stop by sometime.
