It’s hard to say how a design comes about. I always begin by listening and watching a person, seeing their reactions, looking at their hand structure, asking questions. A skill I have learned over the years is to determine what a customer wants beyond what she (or he) says. Sometimes it’s a feeling I get about the personality of the customer. With even the most undecided or difficult person, I can usually figure out what they want. That makes me smile, and amazes their spouse or significant other.

The custom jewelry I design is very much a joint creation, in part creative inspiration, and in part, the customer’s story – whether that be a love story, a new family story, or a multi-generational tale. I respect the art of jewelry design and individual beauty of the person the jewelry is intended for. It should add to the personality of that person – not “take over” the person.
